ARTICLE- COLBY KATZ "FOREVER BABIES' MAKES SKIN CRAWL AT CAROL JAZZAR CONTEMPORARY ART

Colby Katz's "Forever Babies" Makes Skin Crawl at Carol Jazzar Contemporary Art

Katz's pictures are of lifeless dolls, fawned over and pampered by heartbroken parents. They are not the classical memento mori photos popular during the Victorian era when child mortality rates were high and when families had postmortem snaps taken of their dead loved ones as keepsakes.

Katz discovered these types of dolls, called "reborn dolls," in a newspaper several years ago. The article mentioned that some collectors coveted the handpainted dolls that appeared lifelike and took months to create. The figures are painstakingly painted to achieve the right skin tones, and each strand of hair is inserted individually.

While conducting research on the artists who make these dolls, Katz learned that some women were ordering lifelike effigies of their children who had passed away. Katz visited first the artists' studios and later the families of the "forever babies" in their homes in South Dakota, Texas, and Florida, where she took the photographs on exhibit.

To make the doll, the artists used pictures of the living babies. Some of the artists, Katz informs, keep scrapbooks or bulletin boards in their studios with close-up pictures of fingernails, veining, and feet to help them achieve the finest of details, which sometimes cannot be seen in the photo a mom sends in.

Katz also found out that some grieving parents have the dolls weighted to replicate the exact pounds the real child weighed at birth. Some have a sound button inserted into the dolls to mimic a beating heart, while others request that their child's ashes be sewn inside the doll.

The mother of a healthy toddler, Katz did not alter her portraits in any way. Rather, she entered the homes of the families unobtrusively to shoot her pictures with an unflinching gaze.

Take a close look at Katz's portrait of Aubrey and you'll notice not only the pacifier and uncomfortable grimace but also a hip defect.

Her arresting pictures of these morbid moppets reveal the artists' keen eye for subject matter outside of the mainstream and one of the more uncommon grief rituals helping bereft families heal. After their owners' complete their grieving process, some of these dolls end up on eBay, where collectors highly covet them.

Katz's photos are a revelation that will undoubtedly stick in your head long after you exit the space. It's a show not to be missed.

this was an idea i had for the ART GONE WILD Art Show here in Olahoma, except id do Primates (gorilla, Chimp, and Orangutan) and have them for sale...or donates to the show for proceeds to go towards the zoo.)

ive also thought of showing different versions of these  reborns, for instance a vampire, warewolf, zombie, etc  during some horror-fest someplace and have them for sale.

as well as have a few realistic babies done and dressed in train overalls, with an engineer hat, holding a train toy for the DOLL & TRAIN Show here in Oklahoma City, OK

this IS an art...
should be respected as such.

this kit, and its just one of about 10 on www.bountifulbaby.com happens to be the ONLY kit available right now, and..one with a kit im really interested in owning as well..

its the SHYANN kit. she reminds me of daniel allot in her looks...
so the kit includes everything pictured:

21. NEW! Complete kits now include "Making Reborn Baby Dolls, with Denise Pratt" on DVD (a 90 minute instructional video)

Also, since Shyann is an open-eyed baby, this kit will include any in-stock 22mm eyes, as well as a pair of upper light brown or upper medium brown eyelashes (sorry, this is not a customer choice-- we choose the eyes and eyelashes, depending on what is in stock).

$179.95 per kit

i did a price comparison and found that its  prolly cheaper to buy the entire kit and have most of the supplies for another kit than to buy everything separately.
so....im gonna ask for this as one of my Christmas Gifts,

NOD & DREW HAVE BEEN ORDERED

ok, i did it, i went ahead and got NOD without his companion sister BLINKIN...(hated to do it that way, but she wasnt available. ) ill have too keep my eyes out for her again on the site grab her next go around shes avialible.

then as im sending off an email to hubby to inform him of the purchase price with shipping and its total, he sends me back an email telling i can get them all...

which of course would mean i have to add to that second order to get the shipping reduced...ARGH!

i told him if he says to get them id goahead, he needs to learn not to hesitate and just say yes or no, and let that be that.
not like they wont come back again. sheesh.

so, i doubt the retunr emails gonna say i can get those 2 6 inch kits..cause of the extra shipping.
i wouldnt want to anyway based on that alone. ill wait for another pay check.
pretty soon, im gonna have to start ordering supplies, like paints and bodies and wight beads and filler material to put these kits together.
i cant keep ordering them and just having them sit around and never be made.

i have to actually see if what i think i have the ability to do, CAN be done.

so, i think for the next few paychecks , i have to not purchase kits so much, christmas is coming and we want to be able to have some funds for my son.
so if i do get anything it will be the cheaper end of  materials needed, and ill start to stock up on those and have something to start off the new year with.

maybe by years end ill have some dolls i can sell at the next doll and train show and make a little extra cash...
would be nice.

OK< LOOKS LIKE NOD AND DREW GET TO BE PURCCHASED THIS GO AROUND

after some emails back and forth with the hubby...
he agreed the best  purchase would be to get NOD and DREW.

so, ill be ordering them today,

ARGH! BLINKINS NOT AVAILABLE ANYMORE-SOLD OUT!

SHOOT!
i was gonna get BLINKIN and NOD today...and BLINKINs sold out!
NOD is still available. luckily for me, in the boy kit.
but BLINKIN is not.
so, now i have to figure out what im gonna order.

theres a new 6 inch kit available
well, new to me anyway.

JADEE

might decide to get her along with CUTIE
and just the NOD kit. (boy)

i was planning on making these little 6 inchers into fairies and elves. i think theyd be so cute!
and the 10 inches BYRON, EMMA, KIRI into GNOMES.
have the idea all in my head. just have to figure out how to make clothes for a GNOME..lol (oh, and FAIRIES/ELVES! lol)

or i may decide to get the DREW kit

the DREW kit reminds me of a friends baby. MASON B. his nose looked allot like DRWS does when he was born.
if i had my scanner, id scan the newborn baby pic i have of mason to show as a comparison.
all DREW would need is barely there whispy blond hair on his head and hed be an almost twin to Mason B.!

i dont think his moms all that crazy about dolls, so if i did do one of Mason, id have to keep it. just in case she ever decided shed want to have it for later on. so hed be one id keep. along with the protoype of my son Daniel, and the one im gonna do of myself as an infant.

of course, if i did allot of Masons, i could sell them and give masons mom some of the proceeds towards masons college, or future. ive considered similar with prototypes i want to scultp as well, talked to several new parents about the possibility of  selling a kit of their childs as a new infant and having some percentage of the proceeds go to some sort of trust fund for the child for later use.
im still deciding on that.
but if i dod do that, and was able to break into the market with a kit for others to purchase its only right to share some of the funds with the people whos child it is in the 1st place.
as well as the child themself.

so i tool around with that idea as well as how much to divide out of any sale for primate preservation.

i do allot of thinking.
so far still just waiting to get started, lol

REBORNING BOOKS/TUTORIALS

im always researching as many angles as i can get to get as full an idea of whats invloved and whats required and how difficult a new idea challenge/thought will be.

so, i decided to see if there were any books, and went looking for some online.

i found a site that offeres 25 different books /tutorials on almost (if not all) aspects of reborning dolls.

heres a few of the books.

id love to have them all and any videos that i can find online for this art/craft as well.
